Reporting the Protests: A conversation with Siaw Hew Wah and John Batten

Ming Pao Weekly is one of Hong Kong's cultural magazines. Every week, cultural writers tackle social, human interest and cultural topics, complemented by commissioned photographs, drawings, cartoons and design. Alongside the magazine’s feature stories, freelance columnists give alternative, individual opinions.Two veteran cultural writers, whose work regularly features in Ming Pao Weekly, share samples of their own writing, photography and videos about Hong Kong's recent protests, and, discuss the politics, challenges, inspiration and approaches this offers for a cultural magazine.

Siaw Hew Wah is senior editor at Ming Pao. His featured works have been shortlisted in The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA)  - Excellence in Human Rights Reporting, Excellence in Reporting on the Environment, and Excellence in Explanatory Reporting. He has co-authored books such as They are the Eyes of Equals and Travel for Good.

John Batten is Convenor of the Central & Western Concern Group, President of the International Association of Art Critics-Hong Kong (AICAHK) and writes on art, culture, politics and heritage conservation, especially in Ming Pao Weekly & Artomity.
