Tai Kwun Conversations is a series of talks that brings together brilliant minds to discuss the challenges and rewards in pursuing a sustainable future through the active management of heritage resources. Join us at this monthly event to discover outstanding practices in heritage conservation and strike up a conversation with our renowned guest speakers.

Duddell Street Steps and Gas Lamps were declared a monument in 1979. When Super Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong on 16 September 2018, the monument suffered heavy damage.

The project team was determined to adhere strictly to the conservation principle of using original craftsmanship and materials, supplemented by advanced 3D scanning technology, to restore the monument faithfully.

Join us in conversation with the project team to uncover the craftsmanship of the monument and its meticulous restoration.

About the Speakers

Susanna Siu is currently the Executive Secretary of the Antiquities and Monuments Office, Adjunct Associate Professor of the History Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a member of the Education Heritage Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Museum of Education of The Education University of Hong Kong. She was the Chief Curator of Hong Kong Museum of History, and an advisor of Museum of Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum. Two of her heritage projects – the restoration of the Hung Shing Temple on Kau Sai Chau and King Law Ka Suk (ancestral hall) in Tai Po – won an outstanding award of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Her recent heritage projects include the restoration of Duddell Street Steps and Gas Lamps and the conservation of Tung King Kok Yuen.

Alex Liu is the Chief Highway Engineer/Hong Kong in the Highways Department. He is a member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and has more than 31 years of experience in civil engineering. He has been working in the Government for more than 34 years and is currently overseeing the management and maintenance of the road network in Hong Kong Island.

Fanny Ang is one of the few architects working in conservation in Hong Kong. She worked as a conservation architect in the HKSAR Government to implement the “Revitalising Historic Buildings through Partnership Scheme” for projects such as the Tai O Police Station, King Yin Lei, and Haw Par Mansion. Later she returned to private practices on projects such as the revitalisation of the Blue House Clusters. Fanny founded ANG Studio Ltd. in 2015 and continues her contribution in heritage conservation. After Duddell Street, the restoration and upgrade of Tung Lin Kok Yuen in Happy Valley is in progress.
