Yangon is one of Asia’s great heritage cities. In recent years, it has come under increasing pressure as Myanmar experiences unprecedented changes in society. In the midst of this, the Yangon Heritage Trust has blazed a pioneering trail towards making Yangon one of Asia’s most liveable cities through combining conservation and development.

This lecture will not only introduce Yangon’s heritage to the audience but will also provide insight into the Trust’s unique body of work and how it navigated a fascinating political, economic, social and historic landscape.

Speaker: Rupert Mann

Rupert Mann is a cultural and built-heritage specialist in urban environments, and a writer. He has worked within a variety of contexts including with indigenous communities in Australia and remote Papua New Guinea, has excavated Bronze-Age and Byzantine burials in Cyprus, and was a co-founder of the community-based lobby group Melbourne Heritage Action.

He currently lives in Yangon, Myanmar, working with the Yangon Heritage Trust and recently co-authored the Yangon Heritage Strategy. At YHT since 2012, he assists in creating Yangon’s first comprehensive heritage designations and management systems within a broader urban planning effort, capacity building, physical conservation and rethinking how historic public space is used and connects with urban communities.

His photo essays focus on the fascinating nexus between people, place, memory and change in historic urban contexts. His first book, Pentridge: voices from the other side was published in 2017. Upcoming titles look at aspects of contemporary culture in Thailand, Japan and Myanmar.
